    KC Clay Guild Board Minutes - April 3rd, 2024

     

    Start:   6:00     End: 9:00

     

    ATTENDEES:  Aimee Adams, Mike Cerv, Laura Tyler Strawn, Louis Reilly, Matt Moore, John Devaney, Kelsie Herron, Josh Wood, Melynda Stewart, Abby Callaghan, David Firman.

     

    Josh went through Annual Meeting:

    Current Financials - $201,657 Fund Raising Account, $156,597 Operational Bank Account
    Fiscal Responsibility – Debt free, smooth studio operation with healthy fund balance, opportunities to fund workshops and public outreach.

    By the Numbers: 650 members, 100,000 lbs of clay used, 2,000 non member passes to family fun night, 3, 200 hours of open studio time purchased, 3,000 people served through all programs.

    Education: added Amy Troester as Education Coordinator

    Special Events: monitor raku and Christmas parties, Teabowl National Exhibition and Demo, Raku Night-Sold Out, Holiday and Spring Sales

    Volunteerism: over 4,100 monitor hours worked in studio, 1200 volunteer hours worked by Board of Directors, 1872 hours worked by AIRs.

    Public Outreach: New Frontiers, AIRs on the Move, Circuit Court of Jackson County, Imagine That!, Urban Core Scholarship Program, KC Learn, Charitable Donations.
    KC Clay Build: Grants, Fundraising events, individual donations. $201,657 raised so far towards the purchase of a new building.

     *Will make more of an effort to better advertise the committees*
    Next Steps: Fundraising, Grants, events (Auction, Hambingo May 17th), work with Illinois Financial Fund to develop mortgage/building budget, continue to watch for buildings that fit our needs.

    Hamish Jackson will be in town in October and would like to host a workshop -Louis
    -Teapot masterclass all day workshop, we would need to close the studio that Sunday, 16 people, $120 a person.

    Had annual monitor meeting last weekend with 95% attendance. Seemed like everyone had a positive experience and had more clarity on policies. Have about 50 people on waitlist.

    Treasurer’s Report –Melynda

    Melynda will be on vacation out of the country from 2/28 through 3/18 and will miss the March board meeting. 

    Josh will issue payments to teachers and AIRs.

    Workshop description:

    Izanna will demonstrate how she uses coil building techniques to make her sculptures and then demonstrate how she uses slip trailing to decorate the surface. 

    Second Sunday Workshop:

    March 10th 6:00-7:00 PM in person and live

    Abby Callaghan

    Workshop Description:

    Join Abby as she discusses underglazes and her surface decoration process. Learn how she creates smooth, sky-like gradients and uses sgraffito and stencils for sharp, contrasting lines.

    Hands-On Adult Workshop:

    March 17th 5:30-8:30 PM in person, sign up required

    Kelly Daniels

    Workshop Description: Discover new surface decoration and slab building techniques with Kelly as you work together in this hands-on workshop to construct a functional ceramic birdhouse. 

    *First Sunday of each month for kids

    Laura – working on page for board meeting minutes and agendas. Trying to figure out which tab to put it under, or make its own tab. Might need special permissions to make and edit blog to add minutes and agendas to.

    Wondering if we can update the homepage. I think we can update photos and move things around. Can I make a draft and see if we’d want to adjust?

    Grants

    Louis sent out new grant application to Kauffman foundation. We should find out in 60 days. Also mentioned that we could do a matching grant with Kauffman foundation.

    They have been here and have had a tour.

    Also have sent out grant application to Deffenbaugh for 20K.

    We were awarded 5K from ArtsKC

    Artist in Residence

    Flights are on the 19th for NCECA

    Allison offered to bring tshirts, etc since she is driving. Was going to give her $100.

    Huey has a show up right now at Columbia College

    Going to Arkansas Pottery fest in May

    Huey sold a few more mugs that maybe need to be added to the above

    Voted for the gallery to not take a cut if Artist in Res have a gallery show

    Josh – Would like to do Hamburger Mary Fundraiser. They are sending out an email soon to schedule their May fundraisers.

     

    Which Charities can participate?

    Only 501c3 nonprofit organizations or charities may participate in Mary’s Hambingo charity night given they can comply with the following stipulations:



    a)  They must have been an established 501c3 nonprofit for at least 2 years (a legal requirement for Missouri law).

    b)  The primary constituency of the charity cannot be minors (Example: scouting groups, schools, undergraduate colleges, fraternities & sororities, etc) (Also, a legal requirement for Missouri law).

    c)  The charity must have a large enough support base, email list, and constituency to be able to fill the 140+ seats at Hamburger Mary’s KC.

    d) The charity must be located within the metro Kansas City area and its immediate suburbs. We cannot book charity bingo events for groups outside of this area. 

    Josh will pursue this hopefully for May

    Louis – would like to plan an art auction to do this year for the capital campaign. Maybe early November.

    Amy cleaned out bone shelf and there aren’t a lot left. Maybe we should having a making event.
